We understand that proper nutrition is the foundation for living the best life possible. That’s why we develop science-based nutrition products for people of all ages. Our products help babies and children grow, keep bodies strong and active, and support the unique nutrition needs of people with chronic illnesses — to make every stage of life a healthy one.

Abbott is a leader in providing enteral nutrition feeding devices, including enteral feeding pumps, pump sets, enteral feeding tubes and kits. Enteral feeding (also known as tube feeding) is a means of providing nutrition to people who cannot obtain nutrition by swallowing. Enteral nutrition contains all the calories and vitamins a person needs.

There are two types of feeding tubes. A nasogastric feeding tube, or NG-tube, is passed through the nostril, down the oesophagus and into the stomach. A gastric feeding tube, or G-tube, is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen and into the stomach for long-term enteral nutrition.

Placement may be temporary to treat acute conditions, such as malnourishment, or lifelong in the case of chronic disabilities.

Abbott established our first manufacturing facility in Ireland in 1974 at the Ballytivnan site in Sligo. With further investment, we've transitioned the site from a manual to fully automated operation, which now houses state-of-the-art automated manufacturing lines. The facility comprises moulding, extrusion, high-speed assembly and on-site sterilisation in a lean operation. It is a Class A facility with awards for operational excellence, safety, training and development, as well as employee volunteering.

In addition to the manufacturing facility, the site has developed into the Abbott Nutrition Devices Centre of Excellence, with responsibility for all aspects of international enteral pump management, including third-party manufacturer partnerships, pump development, technical support, compliance, complaint management, spare parts management and service centre management.

In addition to making medical devices for Abbott's nutrition business, the site supports other Abbott businesses with a range of components and services, including:

  • Sterilisation of vascular devices
  • Provision of technical expertise in polymer processing and troubleshooting for other businesses and Abbott third-party manufacturers
