SLIGO, Ireland, Sept. 5, 2024 - Abbott employees have successfully raised €12,400 for the Sligo Cancer Support Centre through their Croí an Óir (heart of gold) programme. Bridget Kerrigan, General Manager of Sligo Cancer Support Centre visited the Abbott nutrition site in Sligo this week and was presented with a cheque by Trevor Harrison, Abbott Site Director.
The Sligo Cancer Support Centre opened in 1999 and is located on Wine Street in Sligo. The Centre provides people living with cancer and their families access to support and counselling services. The funds raised by Abbott employees will go towards providing these essential services.
The Centre was chosen by the Abbott team in Sligo as part of Croí an Óir, a volunteering and giving initiative, which was created to enable Abbott employees across Ireland to give back to their local community. Established in 2007, Croí an Óir, which is Irish for ‘heart of gold’, has raised over €2.5m for 870 charities nationwide. Through this initiative employees are encouraged to select a ‘Charity of Choice’ and work together to raise funds for local, worthy causes.
Fundraising for the Sligo Cancer Support Centre commenced in 2023. Since that time various initiatives have taken place including bake sales and raffles.
Presenting the donation, Trevor Harrison, Sligo site director, Abbott said “The Sligo Cancer Support Centre has provided invaluable support to many people in Sligo whose lives have been touched by cancer. It has made a positive impact on the lives of many of our employees and their families, often during the most challenging of times. We are honoured to have had the opportunity to support the Centre and I am proud of our employees for their creative fundraising efforts.”
Bridget Kerrigan, General Manager, from the Sligo Cancer Support Centre, thanked the Abbott employees, saying “Our mission is to provide a place of peace and hope where people with cancer and their families can access support. We cannot do this without the kindness and generosity of others. I want to warmly thank the Abbott team for their support, this donation from the employees of Abbott will go directly to providing much-needed counselling support.”
